The Particle Physics Experiment (PPE) and Nuclear Physics (NP) groups wish to build on their recent successes, which include the observation of the Higgs boson at the LHC, and world leading results on dark matter.

The PPE group has very strong involvement in the ATLAS and LHCb experiments at the LHC. We have significant activities in analysing the large LHC data sets, including measurements of properties of the recently discovered Higgs boson, CP violation and rare decays, as well as in computing and detector development for the upgrades to the LHC experiments. We have a strong interest in a future linear electron-positron collider.

The NP group is leading major initiatives in hadron physics, exotic nuclei, nuclear astrophysics and direct searches for dark matter. Our core strength lies in development of novel instrumentation and its full scientific exploitation. Our interests include in particular research with the 12 GeV upgrade at Jefferson Lab, LUNA at Gran Sasso, the GSI and FAIR facilities, the FMA at Argonne National lab, and the LUX and LZ direct dark matter searches at Homestake.

We seek to make an appointment to strengthen these activities and to shape the future of the PPE and NP groups. Candidates are expected to take a leading role in ATLAS or LHCb, in the exploitation of LHC data and in the LHC upgrades, or in one or more areas of the nuclear physics programme. They should have a proven track record in experimental particle or nuclear physics research, demonstrate the ability to work well within a group, have the ability to lead a team, and have the potential to attract research grant funding.

These appointments are tenure-track Fellowships and held for 5 years. Subject to satisfactory review at the end of year 3, the Fellow will then move to a standard University academic open-ended contract. It is anticipated that most appointees will be successful in obtaining an open ended contract.
