Offline Computing in the CDF Trailers

Policy on Support of Offline Computing in the CDF Trailers

The CDF Task Force in the computing division supports a wide variety of UNIX desktops in the CDF Trailers. Due to limited numbers of personnel, there are some kinds of hardware that we cannot support. We will make a best attempt to support any and all hardware that conforms to the guidelines discussed in the MOU between CDF and Fermilab on offline desktop support and the Recommendations of the Trailer Computing Comittee. However, it is difficult to specify a rapidly changing technology in a document, so before procuring any new computing hardware to be brought into the CDF Trailers and supported by the CDF Task Force, the user must send mail to cdfsys@fnal.gov describing the computing hardware. We will offer procurement guidance at users' request, and let users know in advance whether we can support the technology they propose to introduce to the CDF Trailers. To make the task of desktop support manageable, the CDF Task Force reserves the right to refuse to support equipment they were not consulted on prior to procurement.
