Abstract We present preliminary results on the measurement of the inclusive direct photon production cross section in proton-antiproton collisions at √s = 1.96 TeV, using data collected with the upgraded Collider Detector at Fermilab in Run II, and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.5 fb-1. Measurements are performed as a function of the photon transverse momentum for photons with pT > 30 GeV and |η| < 1.0. Photons are required to be isolated in the calorimeter. We use the calorimeter isolation distribution to estimate the contamination from jets faking isolated photons. The measured cross section is corrected back to the hadron level and compared to NLO pQCD predictions. The NLO pQCD predictions include non-perturbative corrections. We find good agreement between data and the theoretical predictions.

Abstract Inclusive jet cross sections in Z/γ* events, with Z/γ* decaying into an electron-positron pair, are measured as a function of jet transverse momentum and jet multiplicity in p-pbar collisions at √s = 1.96 TeV with the upgraded Collider Detector at Fermilab in Run II, based on an integrated luminosity of 2.5 fb-1. The measurements cover the rapidity region |yjet| < 2.1. and the transverse momentum range ptjet > 30 GeV/c. Next-to-leading order perturbative QCD predictions are in good agreement with the measured cross sections.

Abstract We present a search for new particles whose decays produce two jets (dijets) using proton-antiproton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.13 fb-1 collected with the CDF II detector. The measured dijet mass spectrum is found to be consistent with next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD predictions, and no significant evidence of new particles is found. We set upper limits at the 95% confidence level on cross sections times the branching fraction for the production of new particles decaying into dijets with both jets having a rapidity magnitude |y| < 1. These limits are used to determine the mass exclusions for the excited quark, axigluon, flavor-universal coloron, E6 diquark, color-octet technirho, W', and Z'.

Abstract A measurement of the bjet production cross section is presented for events containing a Z boson produced in p-pbar collisions at sqrt(s)=1.96 TeV, using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2 fb-1 collected by the CDF II detector at the Tevatron. Z bosons are selected in the electron and muon decay modes. Jets are considered with transverse energy E_T>20 GeV and pseudorapidity |eta|<1.5 and are identified as bjets using a secondary vertex algorithm. The ratio of the integrated Z+bjet cross section to the inclusive Z production cross section is measured to be {3.32 +/- 0.53 (stat.) +/- 0.42 (syst.)}x 10-3. This ratio is also measured differentially in jet E_T, jet eta, Z-boson transverse momentum, number of jets, and number of bjets. The predictions from leading order Monte Carlo generators and next-to-leading-order QCD calculations are found to be consistent with the measurements within experimental and theoretical uncertainties.

Abstract The b jet production cross section is measured for events with a W boson in pp collisions at 1.96 TeV. The data were collected using the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF) experiment during Run II of the Fermilab Tevatron collider. W + b jet events are selected by requiring a high pT central electron or muon, large MET and one or two high ET central jets; vertex information are used from the jets to select the subset that are consistent with originating from b quark production. For this analysis a new operating point for the widely used CDF vertex tagger was implemented that has significantly increased b purity over standard methods. Assuming standard model cross sections for top and diboson processes, the b jet production cross section for events with a leptonically decaying W boson is measured to be 2.74 +- 0.27 (stat) +- 0.42(syst) pb. The measurement is compared to several available theoretical predictions. This measured cross section provides a data-driven measurement of a difficult-to-predict background for single top and Higgs searches.

Abstract We present a b-bbar jet cross section measurement based on about 260 pb-1 of data, collected by CDF Run II until September 2004. The analysis strongly relies on the CDF detector good tracking capabilities both at trigger level, as data is selected requiring two displaced tracks at Level 2, and offline, since b-tagging is performed reconstructing secondary vertices inside the jet. Jets are reconstructed using a cone algorithm. The cross section is measured in the central region (|eta|< 1.2) as a function of leading jet Et, b-bbar pair invariant mass and azimuthal angle between the two jets. Results are corrected to the hadron level and compared to Leading Order Monte Carlos (Pythia and Herwig) as well as MC@NLO predictions.

Abstract Measurements of photon + b jet production, obtained with a dataset of 340 pb-1, are presented. Cross-sections are measured for all events containing photons with transverse energy above 26 GeV, and differentially in bins of photon transverse energy between 26 and 70 GeV. Our results agree with leading order predictions.

Abstract We present a study of the photon + b-jet production at the Tevatron in the CDF II detector. The analysis is performed with a dataset that makes use of the on-line tracking reconstruction provided by the SVT to enhance the b content and lower the photon Et threshold with respect to the inclusive photon sample. The trigger efficiency is measured directly from data. We considere events with Et(γ)>12 GeV, |η(γ)|<1.1, Et(j)>20 GeV, |η(j)|<1.5, and Δ R(jγ)>0.7, and measure the total cross section as well as the differential cross sections as a function of photon Et and b-jet Et.

Abstract We study the event topology in Drell-Yan lepton-pair production in proton-antiproton collisions at 1.96 TeV in Run 2 at CDF. We use the direction of the lepton-pair on a event by event basis to define three regions of \eta-\phi space; toward, away and transverse. The "transverse" region is very sensitive to the "underlying event". The data are corrected to the particle level and are then compared with the PYTHIA Tune AW. The properties of the "underlying event" are examined as a function of the lepton-pair transverse momentum. The data are also compared with a previous analysis on the behavior of the "underlying event" in high transverse momentum jet production. The goal is to improve our understanding and modeling of the high energy collider events.

Abstract We present a measurement of the inclusive charged particle pT and ΣEt differential cross section in Minimum-Bias proton-antiproton interactions at sqrt(s)=1960 GeV. The correlation of the particle average transverse pT with the particle multiplicity in the event is also reported. Results are based over 506pb-1 of CDF RunII data and corrected to hadron level. These measures give some of the basic features if the inelastic-non-diffractive particle production spectra. Last Update: Oct 2009       Dataset: 506 pb-1

Abstract We present a measurement of the transverse momentum with respect to the jet axis (kT) of particles in jets produced in p-pbar collisions at sqrt(s)=1.96 TeV. Results are obtained for charged particles within a cone of opening angle 0.5 radians around the jet axis in events with dijet invariant masses between 66 and 737 GeV/c2. The experimental data are compared to theoretical predictions obtained for fragmentation partons within the framework of resummed perturbative QCD using the modified leading log and next-to-modified leading log approximations. The comparison shows that trends in data are successfully described by the theoretical predictions, indicating that the perturbative QCD stage of jet fragmentation is dominant in shaping basic jet characteristics.

Abstract We study the behavior of the "underlying event" in hard scattering p-pbar collisions at sqrt{s} = 1.96 TeV and compare with PYTHIA Tune A and with our published Run I analysis. The "underlying event" is studied using both "charged particle jets" (as was done in our Run I analysis) and using "calorimeter jets". As expected the properties of the "underlying event" are the same for both the "charged particle jet" and the "calorimeter jet" approach and both agree with the Run I analysis.

Abstract We measure the fraction of events with a W or Z boson which are produced diffractively at CDF using the Roman-pot detectors with the goal of determining the diffractive structure function. The ratio of diffractive to non-diffractive W/Z production in the region of momentum fraction 0.03 < xi < 0.10 and 4-momentum transfer squared |t| < 1 is found to be RW = [0.97 ± 0.05(stat) ± 0.11(syst)]% and RZ = [0.85 ± 0.20(stat) ± 0.11(syst)]%.

Abstract Results are presented from a study of diffractive dijet production in p-pbar collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV. The data sample consists of events collected by triggering on a high transverse energy jet in coincidence with a recoil antiproton detected in a Roman Pot Spectrometer (RPS). Approximately, the average jet transverse energy in an event is 12 GeV, and the fractional momentum loss of the recoil antiproton, ξ, and 4-momentun transfer squared, |t|, are in the range 0.03 < ξ < 0.1 and |t| < 0.1 GeV^2. We measure the ratio of single-diffractive (SD) to non-diffractive (ND) dijet event rates as a function of x-Bjorken and Q^2 in the range 10^-3 < x_Bj < 10^-1 and 10^2 < Q^2 < 100^2 GeV^2. We also measure the |t|-distribution of diffractive events as a function of Q^2 in the range |t| < 1 GeV^2 and Q^2 < 100^2 GeV^2. Our results confirm our Run I result on x_Bj dependence of the ratio of SD/ND event rates, show small Q^2 dependence in the SD/ND event ratio, and no observable Q^2 dependence in the diffractive |t|-distributions. These results reinforce the picture emerged from our Run I results for the diffractive exchange, the Pomeron, as evolving similarly to the proton. This picture is consistent with a composite Pomeron made up from a combination of proton PDFs, one on the hard scale that produces the jets and another (or others) on a soft scale responsible for neutralizing the color being exchanged and producing the rapidity gap.

Abstract We report on a study of exclusive J/ψ + γ production. Using 93 pb-1 of CDF Run II data collected with a dimuon trigger, J/ψ events produced by Double Pomeron Exchange are selected. 10 events containing a J/ψ and a photon candidate but nothing else visible in the full detector including the very forward regions are observed. Those events are consistent with potentially being from χ_c decays. Since the background from multiplicity fluctuations in Double Pomeron Exchange has not been estimated yet, an upper limit on the cross section for exclusive J/ψ + γ production has been extracted: 49 pb ± 18 (stat) ± 39 (syst), for | y | < 0.6.

Abstract We report on a search for the process ppbar -> &gamma+W/Z with W/Z to qqbar in events containing two jets and a photon at the center-of-mass energy sqrt(s)=1.96 TeV, using 184 pb-1 of data collected by the CDF II detector. A neural network event selection has been developed to optimize the rejection of the large QCD production background; it is shown that this method gives a significant improvement in both signal-to-noise ratio and signal sensitivity, as compared with an event selection on conventional cuts. An upper limit is presented for the &gamma+W/Z production cross section with the W and Z decaying hadronically.

Abstract The energy measurement of jets produced by b-quarks at hadron colliders suffers from biases due to the peculiarities of the hadronization and decay of the originating B hadron. The impact of these effects can be estimated by reconstructing the mass of Z boson decays into pairs of b-quark jets. From a sample of 584 pb-1 of data collected by the CDF experiment in 1.96 TeV proton-antiproton collisions at the Tevatron collider, we show how the Z signal can be identified and measured. Using the reconstructed mass of Z candidates we determine a jet energy scale factor for b-quark jets with a precision better than 2%. This measurement allows a reduction of one of the dominant source of uncertainty in analyses based on high transverse momentum b-quark jets. We also determine, as a cross-check of our analysis, the Z boson cross section in hadronic collisions using the b-bbar final state as sigma x B(Z->b-bbar) = 1578 +636 -410 pb.

Abstract We present a measurement of the inclusive jet cross section in p-pbar collisions at sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV based on data collected by the CDF II detector with an integrated luminosity of 1.13 fb^-1. The measurement was made using the cone-based Midpoint jet clustering algorithm in the rapidity region of |y|<2.1. The results are consistent with next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD predictions based on recent parton distribution functions (PDFs), and are expected to provide increased precision in PDFs at high parton momentum fraction x. The results are also compared to the recent inclusive jet cross section measurement using the k_T jet clustering algorithm, and we find that the ratio of the cross sections measured with the two algorithms is in agreement with theoretical expectations over a large range of jet transverse momentum and rapidity.

Abstract We present the first measurement of two-particle momentum correlations in jets produced in p-pbar collisions at sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV. Results are obtained for charged particles within a restricted cone with an opening angle of 0.5 radians around the jet axis and for events with dijet masses between 66 and 563 GeV/c^2. A comparison of the experimental data to theoretical predictions obtained for partons within the framework of resummed perturbative QCD in the next-to-leading log approximation (NLLA) shows that the parton momentum correlations survive the hadronization stage of jet fragmentation, giving further support to the hypothesis of local parton-hadron duality. The extracted value of the NLLA parton shower cutoff scale Q_eff is found to be (1.4^{+0.9}_{-0.7}) x 100 MeV.

Abstract We present the first measurement of the production cross section of a W boson with a single charm quark (c) in p-pbar collisions at sqrt(s)=1.96 TeV, using soft muon tagging of c jets. In a data sample of ~1.8 fb-1, recorded with the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron, we select events with W+1 or 2 jets. We use the charge correlation between the W and the muon from the semileptonic decay of a charm hadron to extract the Wc signal. We measure sigma_{Wc}(pT,c>20 GeV/c, |etac|<1.5) x BR(W->l\nu) = 9.8+/-3.2 pb, in agreement with theoretical expectations.

Abstract We present the first observation and cross section measurement of exclusive dijet production in pbar-p interactions, pbar + p --> pbar + dijet + p. Using a data sample of 310 pb-1 collected by the Run II Collider Detector at Fermilab at √s = 1.96 TeV, exclusive cross sections for events with two jets of transverse energy ET >= 10 GeV have been measured as a function of minimum ET(jet). The exclusive signal is extracted from fits to data distributions based on Monte Carlo simulations of expected dijet signal and background shapes. The simulated background distribution shapes are checked in a study of a largely independent data sample of 200 pb-1 of b-tagged jet events, where exclusive dijet production is expected to be suppressed by the Jz=0 total angular momentum selection rule. Results obtained are compared with theoretical expectations.

Abstract We present a measurement of the cross section for W-boson production in association with jets in pbarp collisions at √s = 1.96 TeV. The analysis uses a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 320 pb-1 collected with the CDF II detector. W bosons are identified in their electron decay channel and jets are reconstructed using a cone algorithm. For each W+>= n-jet sample (n= 1 - 4) we measure sigma(ppbar ->W+>=n-jet)x BR(W -> e nu) with respect to the transverse energy E_T of the nth-highest ET jet above 20 GeV, for a restricted W -> e nu decay phase space. The cross sections, corrected for all detector effects, can be directly compared to particle level W+ jet(s) predictions. Abstract We have searched for exclusive 2-photon production in proton-antiproton collisions at sqrt{s} = 1.96 TeV, using 532 pb-1 of integrated luminosity taken by the Run II Collider Detector at Fermilab. The event signature requires two electromagnetic showers, each with transverse energy E_T > 5 GeV and pseudorapidity |eta| < 1.0, with no other particles detected in the event. Three candidate events are observed. We discuss the consistency of the three events with gamma-gamma, pi0-pi0, or eta-eta production. The probability that other processes fluctuate to 3 events or more is 1.7x10^-4. An upper limit on the cross section of p+pbar --> p+gamma-gamma+pbar is set at 410 fb with 95% confidence level.

Abstract The single inclusive bottom jet cross section is measured for events containing a Z boson in p-pbar collisions at sqrt{s} = 1.96 TeV using the Collider Detector at Fermilab. Z bosons are identified in their electron and muon decay modes. b-jets with Et > 20 GeV and | eta | < 1.5 are identified by reconstructing a secondary decay vertex. The measurement is based on an integratd luminosity of 337 pb-1 for the electron decay mode and 324 pb-1 for the muon decay mode. We find a cross section of Sigma (Z+bjet, Z->l+l-) = 0.96 ± 0.35 pb and the fraction of b-jets to the total number of jets in this sample is 2.39 ± 0.86 %. This measurement is in agreement with NLO QCD predictions.

The cross section is measured as a function of the diphoton mass, the transverse momentum of the diphoton system, and the azimuthal angle between the two photons and is found to be consistent with perturbative QCD predictions.

Abstract We report on a study of jet shapes in inclusive jet production in p-pbar collisions at sqrt{s} = 1.96 TeV using the upgraded collider detector at Fermilab in Run II and based on an integrated luminosity of 170 pb-1. Measurements are carried out on jets with rapidity 0.1 < | yjet | < 0.7 and transverse momentum 37 < ptjet < 380 GeV/c. The jets have been corrected to the hadron level. The measured jet shapes are compared to leading-order QCD parton-shower Monte Carlo predictions as implemented in the PYTHIA and HERWIG programs. PYTHIA, tuned to describe the underlying event as measured in CDF Run I, provides a better description of the measured jet shapes than does PYTHIA or HERWIG with their default parameters.
