INFORMATION FOR NEW USERS AND STAKEHOLDERS WITH PRODUCTION MODULES
version 1.1, John Yoh, 6/20/00
version 1.11, Linus Wong, 7/12/00
Note : when you enter the database, there are online tutorials and
references--however, some of those might be outdated.
Note that there are two CDF databases--the CMD-production (miscomp1)
and the CMD-test (int1). Int1--"integration"--the test DB might have recent
changes, and is a beta-test area; you can also fool around with modules in
the test DB to learn how to do things, such as move the position of a
module, do a repair job (both specify a repair job, and to finish a repair
job). You should always use the test DB (int1) to practise, such
as the 7 tutorials linked from the main page.
In order to put your modules into the CMD and use it to keep track of
alterations, history, position and location, repairs, etc. the following
steps should be taken :
Getting an account on the CMD
- You and anyone in your group who need to update the module information
must get accounts on the CMD using this web site
http://miscomp.fnal.gov/mishome/access.html
You will see a list of many db where you could try to access--
LEAVE EVERYTHING as deafult EXCEPT the last item, "CDF Module Database
Access Level" (scroll down to the bottom entry) --click on the third
line "Ability to create and edit service request, jobs, and module
configurations".
- once your account(s) are active, get either the stakeholder, or (if
you are a stakeholder) get johny@fnal.gov to give you access
privileges to your module type. Stakeholders can assign
full or partial (e.g., repair history only) access privileges to
other people in your group (they must have an account also)
Click on Access change to change
access level for your people.
Entering New Module type into the DB
- If your units are already in the PREP database, you simply need to send
me an email giving the NAME of your module type. I can then arrange to have
those units assigned to CDF accessible by the CMD.
- If you Module type are not (and will not in the future be) in the PREP
database, then send me the following information:
a short (15 character or less suggested) NAME for your module
a short (60 character or less) description of your module
How many units do you expect, and when they will arrive at Fermilab
We can have the new module types delared
When you are ready to insert units into the database
- Send email to jones@fnal.gov when you are ready to insert units into
the database. There are two ways : (1) Just give the module type
and the serial number of units to be inserted. you can then use the
CMD update to put in all information (2) Give Shirley a EXCEL
spread sheet of the info to be inserted for each module.
- Once units have been inserted, you can update any information on any
of your units, as long as you have the appropriate privileges.
To update information on units already inserted in the CMD
There are two ways to update info. on units already inserted
- For update on a few units, you can use the web. just click here :
CMD, use production db (misprod1)
or the test db (int1) to try out. Note
that updating requires IE5 or above, or Netscape 4.6 or above.
- If you need to make a large number of updates at one time, the web would
be too slow. The speedier way is to use a PC or xterm to "
direct Oracle connection on fncdug" --contact jones@fnal.gov for more info.
