CDF offline software on non-Fermi Linux
As of today the following situation is true:
- the preferred configuration for installing CDF offline code
is a PC configured with the Fermi Linux operating system. This
guarantees uniformity and allow the CDF code management and
distribution group to diagnose problems and in general help the
user wit installation
- there is no guarantee that CDF offline will run on any random
Linux configuration
- neverhless there is evidence from several sites that a few
simple "adjustments" make it possible to install CDF offline
environment on normal Red Hat 6.2 as usually found in other
laboratories and universitis (i.e. an operating system that
has passed some sanity checks), so called "vanilla linux"
- installaing CDF offline on vanilla Linux has demostrated
to be compatible also with AFS on multi-CPU platforms (false
for Fermi Linux)
- among sites who have done this, LBL, Michigan and Padova kindly agreed
to share their knowledge. The contacts are
- Run II code installation in Padova
- CDF software 4.2.0 and above works on RedHat 7, both Fermi and
non Fermi. Some symbolic links may be required. See

Italy's log.
