MCS PC Security Policy

In order to ensure that the PC's which will be part of the Monitoring Controls System cannot easily be compromised, either inadvertently or purposefully, there are some rules that will be implemented for each PC. These will be enforced by Sam Segler and Mark Knapp, the system administrators.

First of all, all user passwords should be kept in strict confidence and not shared with anyone. If someone needs access to a given PC, an NT user account can be created for them with the appropriate privileges. See either Sam Segler or Mark Knapp if you need an NT user account on any of the machines in question.

Secondly, no extraneous software shall be installed on any of the PC's other than necessary system software and applications relevant to the Monitoring System. Relevant applications would include IFIX and perhaps Office, if needed. These would also include any development software and drivers for your system, but not cutesy screen savers or games. Save these for your office desktop machine. Definitely do not install the Berkeley SETI screen saver, for example.

All PC's that are part of the monitoring system will have the latest version of Norton Anti Virus installed and will be kept up to date via the live update feature. This will help keep us protected from possible virus contamination. However, do not download extraneous software from the internet on these PC's. Also never open any email attachments on these PC's that are either *.exe or *.doc files that you didn't expect to get or that you don't know the source of.

Never walk away from your PC without either shutting it down or locking it. To lock it, hit the cntrl-alt-del keys simultaneously and click on the "Lock Workstation" button. You just need to re-enter your password to get back in. Also, do not share any IFIX passwords. If someone needs access to IFIX, we can set them up with an account. Sam and Mark will be enabling security from the FIX server for all the PC's as it is needed.
