Dear Colleagues, CDF Note#2946 which describes a study of the SVX' detector and the development of the new SVX' MC simulation is now available for perusing. This coffee table document contains a large number (32) of full size plots (which explains its length of 61 pages) comparing the new MC to DATA. Here's the abstract: The SVX' MC Simulation H.Y.Chao, D.Glenzinski, J.Incandela, N.M.Shaw, F.Snider, D.Stuart, G.Unal, M.J. Wang, W.Yao ABSTRACT The important role of the CDF silicon vertex detector in top and bottom physics warrants a detailed understanding and faithful simulation of this detector. A consistent data and MC b tagging efficiency, for example, is a high priority of the B tag group for the run Ib top analysis. In this note we summarize the results of a project which we believe has culminated in a good understanding of signal formation in SVX'. This understanding, which is facilitated by the good signal-to-noise ratio of the new detector, has been applied to the creation of a fast detector simulation which reproduces the silicon detector data in significant detail at the cluster, track and vertex levels. Recent comparisons of data and MC with the new SVX' simulation indicate good agreement for b tagging efficiencies. The simulation is built upon parameterizations of very basic characteristics of detector signals. To reproduce variations in noise and thresholds across the detector, real noise and hardware threshold values are obtained from the CDF database for use in the simulation. Pulse height and charge profiles (distribution of charge among the strips in a cluster), are studied in the context of microstrip geometry, dE/dx and track parameters of ionizing particles in silicon, and the presence of noise and delta rays. Finally the underlying event in PYTHIA is tuned at the generation level to yield a good match to data for the number of on-track and off-track clusters in generic jet events. The outcome of this is a straightforward simulation procedure which we describe and demonstrate by (exhaustive) comparison to data.
