The Analysis

This page is for the top dilepton cross section analysis using the lepton & isolated track data set. These CDF results, combined with another top dilepton analysis, were submitted for publication in PRL (hep-ex/0404036) in April 2004.

In this analysis, we measure the top cross section where top decays to a W boson and a b quark ( t → Wb), and both W bosons in turn decay leptonically. The signature for our data set is two leptons, two or more jets and missing energy. We use tight lepton idenficiation on the first lepton and only require loose lepton id on the second leg to gain acceptance overall and to hadronic tau decays. Our data set consists of 197/pb collected during Run 2 at the Fermilab Tevatron at a center of mass energy of √s = 1.96 TeV.

We measure the top cross section to be

σ = 7.0 + 2.7 - 2.3 (stat) +1.5 -1.3 (sys) ± 0.4 (lumi) pb.

assuming BR(W→lν) = 10.8 %.

At right you see a view of one of our top dilepton candidates from the CDF event display. The red and blue towers are two electrons. The yellow and green towers are two jets in the central part of the detector. The pink tower is an additional jet in the foward direction.

Talk Slides

Below you can see screenshots of a short talk describing the analysis. The powerpoint for this talk is available at the bottom of the page, and the plots are available in eps and gif formats.

Please use the raw eps/gif if you are going to include any of the plots in your talk as they are of higher quality than the screenshots below.
